A Journey Inspired by the Seniors Who Changed My Life

Founder Story

Meet Apple Yin

More than 20 years ago, I was a nursing student during my first clinical rotation in an oncology department.

As a new student nurse, one of the most stressful skills to learn was starting IVs. Families often watched closely, and when an IV attempt was not successful, the pressure could feel overwhelming.

Like many nursing students, my classmates and I sometimes felt nervous, discouraged, and even brought to tears.

But the senior patients were different.

Even when their veins were fragile and difficult, many seniors responded with patience and kindness.

They would gently say:

“You just need more practice.”

“Don’t be nervous. Try again.”

“Many people have tried before. It’s okay.”

Some shared stories from their lives to help calm us down. Some smiled through their own discomfort simply to make us feel less afraid of failing.

Their patience, encouragement, and warm smiles touched me deeply. More than twenty years later, those moments remain among the most cherished memories of my life.

When my first clinical rotation ended, I told my classmates that if I could one day create a place dedicated to caring for seniors, it would be one of the most meaningful things I could ever do. These remarkable individuals deserved the very best care, the greatest patience, and the deepest respect our society could offer.

What Seniors Taught Me

They Were More Than Patients

The seniors Apple cared for were not simply patients. They were teachers.

They showed patience when others were frustrated. They shared stories when others felt discouraged. They demonstrated dignity, kindness, humor, and grace during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Those lessons never left her.

A Dream That Never Changed

The Heart of
Happy Sunflower

Seniors Once Cared for Me. Today, Happy Sunflower Exists to Return That Care.

Years later, when I began researching assisted living options, I noticed something important.

Many families were looking for safety and support, but they were also looking for something more personal than a large facility.

They wanted their loved one to feel known, not lost.

They wanted care that felt warm, familiar, and human.

I believed a smaller residential assisted living home could offer something special.

A place where caregivers know each resident personally.

A place where routines feel familiar.

A place where seniors are treated like family.

That belief became Happy Sunflower Senior Living.

Through the Cottage model, residents receive personalized support in a warm residential home where familiar caregivers, meaningful relationships, and daily connection are part of everyday life.
