Caring Was Part of Everyday Life
My journey began long before Happy Sunflower. I grew up in a family where healthcare was woven into everyday life. My grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and sister all worked in hospitals or medicine, and conversations about caring for people were part of our dinner table.
Some of my earliest memories are doing homework in my mother’s clinic while patients came and went. I was not only growing up around medicine; I was growing up around compassion. Nursing felt less like a decision than a natural continuation of that life.

During my first nursing clinical rotation in an oncology department, I was nervous. Learning to start IVs on real patients was intimidating, and every unsuccessful attempt made me question whether I was good enough.
But the seniors I cared for met my fear with patience and encouragement. They believed I was there to care for them. What they never knew was that they were caring for me, too.
They taught me that care is more than knowledge or technical skill. It is patience, respect, and kindness. More than twenty years later, that lesson found its home in Happy Sunflower.
